M3GAN 2.0 Release Date, Story & Everything We Know

M3GAN 2 updates are becoming more regular, as the breakout success of James Wan's terrifying AI-powered toy gone rogue is already creating sequel conversations. Like The Conjuring and Insidious before it, James Wan's 2022 creation M3GAN seems to have successfully spawned a franchise. The film, directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (who worked on the story with Wan), brings the creepy factor with some humor sprinkled in, and it tackles themes of modern-day technology to bring the 2020s its own spiritual successor Chucky, voiced with terrifying synthetic sinisterness by Jenna Davis. The titular character is an artificially intelligent doll that becomes self-aware and acts hostile toward anyone who treats her as such — and the M3GAN ending left the door wide open for a sequel (literally, since M3GAN uploaded herself into Gemma's house).

M3GAN received high praise from critics, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 105 reviews, and it become a phenomenal hit after going viral on TikTok. The movie made $176 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), which is even more impressive given its low budget of $12 million. Not only was the character of M3GAN an instant hit, but she wasn't carrying a terrible movie like some other noteworthy horror characters and villains become cursed to do. M3GAN was praised not only for the doll herself but as an all-around movie — another resounding success in the genre for James Wan. The box office success of M3GAN all but confirmed a sequel would happen, and now it's official, as M3GAN 2 updates have revealed returning characters, the sequel's title, and a release date. However, unlike other horror franchises that fast-track sequels, there's still a while before M3GAN 2 hits theatres.

A M3GAN sequel is confirmed, and it is officially titled M3GAN 2.0, in keeping with the technology themes of the original film. However, even though the sequel is in development, M3GAN 2 updates reveal that the M3GAN 2.0 development isn't being rushed. One of the original movie's producers, Jason Blum, explained, "We've got to write a script. I mean, you’ve gotta give us a little bit of time. The creative process suffers when you [rush]. You pretend you’re not making compromises, but you always do. So I wanted to give us enough time to make the movie great."

That's a commendable move, focusing on the quality of the M3GAN 2.0 script instead of rushing it. However, the development of the sequel may have been delayed due to the 2023 writer's strike. If that's the case, there might be a domino effect where the production is delayed and then the release date is delayed, which has been the case for many other projects.

Release Date

The M3GAN 2 release date has been confirmed, and it will hit theatres on January 17, 2025, provided the movie doesn't suffer delays. The original M3GAN was filmed in mid-2021, though it had to undergo reshoots to minimize the violence. Still, the horror film had a relatively quick turnaround, with a theatrical release coming a year and a half after production first began. Given how resourceful James Wan, Universal, and the crew are, M3GAN 2 could still keep that January 2025 date even if the development was affected by the writer's strike, as it's still so far away.

Cast

Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) were the M3GAN main characters who were under threat in the original movie, and miraculously, they both survive, so it comes as no surprise that they're the first characters confirmed to be returning in M3GAN 2 updates. Other than that, there are no other details on which M3GAN actors will return for the sequel or what new characters will be introduced. It hasn't even been confirmed whether Jenna Davis will return to voice the titular doll.

The most important member of the crew hasn't been confirmed yet either. While Akela Cooper is returning to write the movie, it isn't official that director Gerard Johnstone is returning to the director's chair, but he has had talks with the studio (via 1 News). The filmmaker explained, "I would love to do it," adding, "I think there's so much scope. There's a lot of ideas we didn't get to fit into that first movie and I would at least hint that for people that loved the movie but there's stuff they wanted to see more of." The director has his own sequel title, "The Marvelous Mrs. M3GAN."

M3GAN 2 Story

No M3GAN 2 updates have revealed anything about the story, Wan has been considering a sequel ever since the first movie's development (via Collider). The director explained that he always likes to "think of a bigger world," which hints at a more ambitious sequel. In the same 1 News interview with Johnstone, the director envisioned a sequel surrounding ChatGPT. The filmmaker noted, "You can have these very involved conversations with a computer. Me and my kid were getting it to help us make a story about a frog samurai and it would do it and we'd say "now make it funny" and it would do it... It's just phenomenal."

Though M3GAN doesn’t have a post-credits scene, its ending teases more to come, with M3GAN having transferred her AI processing system to Elsie, Gemma’s virtual home assistant. It’s possible M3GAN will take on a new form, branching out into multiple tech gadgets to infiltrate Gemma’s home. With the AI doll’s body destroyed at the end of M3GAN, M3GAN will likely look a lot different in the horror sequel. For a while, M3GAN could be learning as much as she can in her new form before figuring out a way to either possess a new titanium body or take the form of a newly created robot.

Whatever M3GAN looks like in the future, she will surely want revenge on Gemma and Cady for trying to destroy her. M3GAN 2 could see the titular AI doll becoming even more vengeful than she was in the first film. If she continues developing her emergent capabilities, M3GAN could lash out and become even more dangerous. With the power of other technologies under her control too, the doll could turn her attention to the world beyond M3GAN's Gemma and Cady. However, she may also want to continue protecting Cady as her original programming intended. Either way, the potential of M3GAN 2 could go anywhere, and that’s exciting.
