Will Loki Season 3 Happen?

Although it hasn't yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios, Loki's MCU story could continue in the MCU. Will season 3 actually happen?

After the release of Phase 5's Loki season 2, could the God of Mischief's MCU journey continue in season 3? Tom Hiddleston has portrayed Loki since 2011's Thor, initially depicted as a villain in the MCU, but eventually going through a redemptive arc that has now seen him become one of the most integral heroes to the Multiverse Saga. Loki season 2's ending delivers on that redemption in stunningly grand style

Given Loki's popularity, MCU fans will inevitably call for his return in future Marvel movies or TV shows, but the question now is whether that is even possible. Loki season 2 changes everything for Hiddleston's anti-hero, and while there are certainly possibilities for other cast members to potentially return, it looks like his time is done. So what's been said about a potential Loki season 3, and what potential is there in the storyline of season 2 that could possibly set up more?

Loki Season 3 Has Not Been Confirmed By Marvel

Loki season 2 executive producer Kevin Wright discussed the possibility of Loki season 3 in an interview with Collider published October 12, 2023. When asked about whether they'd made the new season with the plan of another prospective follow up in mind, Wright stated that, "It was similar to Season 1 in we wanted to tell this story and tell it well, but even in Season 1, we obviously were thinking about where we were going. I would say Season 1 and Season 2 were developed and created as, like, kind of two chapters of the same book. We felt pretty strongly, all of us involved, that Season 2 was about closing that book but that there are many other books on the shelf for this character and for this world. But this felt like it wanted to be the conclusion of these great things that we set up in Season 1. We don't want to constantly leave people with drastic cliffhangers for our finales."

While this makes it clear that Loki season 2 was created with the intention of finishing off the overall story, the statement also suggests season 3 could still be possible. Leaving enough room for a follow-up story makes particular sense given the reported recalibration of the MCU to focus on including multi-season shows as part of its viewing experience, which would encourage the idea of a third season. Though expanding other shows may be more of a priority, Loki has been one of the most consistently well-viewed and received Disney+ series that the MCU has put out, and thus capitalizing on it during a period where the franchise is looking to expand its television shows anyway would appear to be a practical decision.

In another interview with Deadline, Loki EP Kevin Wright talked about there being more stories to tell with these characters:

"We take it season by season, and there are certainly things that Tom and I and other casts have talked about of where we see this going, and I know there’s some excitement for that internally, but just from a storytelling standpoint, I think we always conceived of seasons 1 and 2 as a whole. That these are two chapters of the same book, and that season two is finishing that book, and there are other stories to be told there, but I think they would be new books, if that’s not too coy."

While Tom Hiddleston spoke of his excitement at returning to play Loki ahead of season 2 and hyped "what comes next", his comments extend no further than the events of the second season. In the absence of any marketing for the show thanks to the SAG-Aftra actors strike, neither he nor any of the cast have been asked about the possibility of returning.

Loki Season 3 Cast: Who Could Return?

The entire principal cast from Loki season 1 returned for the second season, and if it happened, most could return for season 3. Tom Hiddleston's God of Stories may not be able to leave his throne, but there could be other variants who look like Hiddleston out there. Whether that would undermine his sacrifice is another matter.

Sophia Di Martino's female variant, Sylvie could return; Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors could possibly reappear as the benevolent variant Victor Timely; and given the way Loki season 2's ending sets up the TVA as monitors of Kang variants, any of the agents and hunters could reappear. So that's Owen Wilson as TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius, Wunmi Mosaku as high-ranking TVA Hunter B-15, Ke Huy Quan's Ouroboros AKA OB and Eugene Cordero's Casey. Tara Strong's Miss Minutes has also been reprogrammed, so if the TVA return, so would she.

The two characters most unlikely to return would be Jonathan Majors' He Who Remains, whose death was briefly undone, but then recanonized by Loki's sacrifice. And Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Judge Ravonna Renslayer found herself in the Void, facing down Alioth, the realm's guardian monster. Her future doesn't look rosy.
