Neill Blomkamp's District 9 was a critical and commercial hit, and despite a sequel being rumored for years, there's been a distinct lack of concrete District 10 news. Inspired by South African apartheid, District 9 is set within a Johannesburg camp for aliens who came to Earth in the 1980s only to become stuck on our planet and put into refugee camps where they are mistreated and ignored. A sequel, District 10, has been discussed in the years since, with a District 9 sequel in high demand from fans.
Nearly 15 years since the original, the trickle of District 10 news from Neill Blomkamp and studio TriStar remains scarce. District 9 was seen as a fresh and compelling new sci-fi story, with Neill Blomkamp himself being touted as the next big inventive voice in movies. The director's career quickly turned to new projects such as Chappie and Gran Turismo, with the follow-up to his debut movie always promised in the future. While District 10 news crops up every once in a while, it remains unclear if or when the movie will arrive.
District 10: Latest News
Taking into account the ending to District 9, it's also reasonable to expect Jason Cope back as the heroic District 9 alien Christopher who becomes an ally of Wikus while also trying to save his people. Another key player is Vanessa Hayward as Tania, Wikus' wife, though nothing is confirmed at present. Blomkamp has, however, teased a mostly new plot for District 10, rather than a conventional continuation, and this could limit the amount of familiar faces.
District 10: Story Details
The District 10 story has not been revealed, but there are many questions left over from District 9 that District 10 won't be able to avoid answering. District 9 ends with Christopher managing to power his ship and escape Earth, promising to return and cure Wikus of his transformation into a "prawn." Christopher could return with an army from his homeworld to invade Earth as revenge. It is also possible that humans further mistreated the remaining "prawns" on Earth, fearing that none of them can be trusted.
However, there are some indications that District 10 will go in a new direction. Blomkamp says an unspecified period in American history has inspired his District 10 story, so the previous dynamic between aliens and humans could be markedly different, rather than repeating the narrative of man ruling over slums filled with aliens. There's no word on which historical era Blomkamp is eyeing for District 10, but it could be the inhumane internment camps that many Japanese Americans were subjected to during WWII.
