The 2023 Adam Sandler animated film Leo was something of a surprise hit for Netflix, and now the family-friendly comedy is returning for a sequel, Leo 2. Headed by the voice of Sandler in the lead role, Leo tells the story of an aged lizard who has been the classroom pet for a school in Florida for decades. However, on the eve of his grand escape, he learns he must save the students from a mean substitute teacher. Besides its star-studded cast, Leo dazzled with its crisp visuals and strong premise which elevated it above the usual kid-friendly fare.
Continuing a string of critical successes for the Sandler/Netflix partnership, Leo scored high marks on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its music, visuals, and Sandler's performance in particular. Though the tone was somewhat uneven, Leo was a labor of love for Sandler, and he involved several of his family members in the cast. More importantly for Netflix, Leo also scored the biggest viewership numbers of any animated film the platform has debuted, and they are already planning to ride that wave of momentum in
Leo 2 Is Confirmed
The first Leo film debuted on November 17th, 2023, and it didn't take long for it to become a bona fide hit for Netflix. With that in mind, Netflix wasted little time in confirming that Leo 2 was in the works. Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix spoke on the subject of a sequel and left little doubt about where the streamer stood on continuing Sandler's latest animated franchise. While praising the animation team for their continued success, Sarandos said that Netflix was already "kicking around Leo 2" just months after the first film's debut.
Leo 2 Cast
No names are currently attached to Leo 2 and it is still in the very early stages of development, which means key details won't be revealed for a while. However, the success of the sequel depends on Adam Sandler's return as the titular lizard, and any replacement would seem lackluster. The rest of the cast could also return en masse after the first movie's happy ending, and many of the big names would help bolster the sequel. The only cast member unlikely to return is Cicely Strong as Miss Malkin, since she has already served her purpose as the movie's antagonist.
Leo 2 Story
While nothing has been officially confirmed, the ending of Leo left the door open for the sequel to go in any number of directions. The most obvious plot would see Leo attempt to adjust to life as the pet of the kindergarten class, and all the good and bad aspects of leaving the fifth graders behind. On the other hand, Leo 2 could follow the septuagenarian lizard as he goes on another exciting adventure outside of the school grounds where he once again finds his purpose. Regardless, the sequel has a lot to work with, especially if Sandler and company return.
