New Insidious Movie Confirmed, Gets Release Date

With a spin-off already in the works, the popular horror franchise Insidious will add another installment to the series, as Insidious 6 has been officially confirmed. Sony has also revealed the new release date for next summer.

Per Deadline, Sony Pictures has already set a release date for the next Insidious film, which will be released on August 29, 2025. The first film in the franchise was released in 2010, with five more sequels following. The horror film series was created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan.

It was initially believed Insidious had ended with the fifth installment, but Sony Pictures has decided to continue the franchise. This is apart from the upcoming spin-off Thread: An Insidious Tale, which will star Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, with Jeremy Slater at the helm. The new entry follows 2023's Insidious: The Red Door, which had franchise star Patrick Wilson at the helm in his directorial debut, grossing $189 million at the worldwide box office.

So far, there aren't any other details about the upcoming installments. It's also unclear which if any, characters will return, as Insidious 5 seemed to conclude Josh Lambert's story. Overall, the franchise grossed over $740 million worldwide at the box office (via The Numbers), making it a very profitable IP.

The Summer of 2025 Will Feature Many Horrors

The new Insidious installment isn't the only one Sony Pictures revealed for next year. The studio is focusing on more horror stories and has just revealed the new date for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. The new horror will premiere on July 18, 2025.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will have Do Revenge's director Jennifer Kaytin at the helm with a script by Leah McKendrick, with Neil Moritz serving as a producer. There aren't many details about the plot of the new legacy sequel, but its story is based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan, and might be linked to the original 1997 film

The original stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. aren't officially tapped to return. However, it has been reported that the two of them were in talks to return to the new version. So far, there's no cast attached to the project.

Insidious 6 and I Know What You Did Last Summer aren't the only horror sequels hitting theaters in the summer of 2025. M3GAN 2.0 has just been delayed from its initial release date, May 16, 2025, and will now premiere in the summer movie season on June 27, 2025.
