The Batman 2 Gets Exciting Production Update From Andy Serkis

Vengeance is returning to Gotham City as Andy Serkishas revealed that The Batman Part II begins filming later this year. Serkis plays Alfred in Matt Reeves' The Batman, the long-time butler of the Wayne family. Serkis' iteration of the character is a younger version than fans are used to, with Alfred usually being depicted as around 80+ years old in the comics (and played by Michael Caine in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy), but his younger age lines up with the film's younger depiction of Bruce Wayne/Batman (played by Robert Pattinson).

Andy Serkis recently appeared at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024 (via Popverse) and spoke about the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2022's The Batman. Serkis began by teasing fans, pretending to give away the entire plot of the sequel, saying:

"Well, there is a huge arc which you’ve got – nah, I’m not giving away anything."

The English actor then told the audience how much he knew about the new movie. Serkis also gave fans a rough timeline of the film's production and release date. After the unexpected reveal, he had nothing but praise for director Matt Reeves, lauding his writing skills, and teasing an excellent script for the new movie. Andy Serkis said:

"Basically, I know nothing about the movie other than that I've just found out that we're probably likely to be starting filming early next year. Therefore, if you do the math, it'll be a year and half after that. I know Matt [Reeves] is working really hard on the script. Matt Reeves being Matt Reeves, the extraordinary filmmaker that he is, I can only assume that it's going to be another brilliant script, because I thought what he did with that first film was pretty amazing. I loved working with Rob Pattison, and I really look forward to playing Alfred once more."

Matt Reeves' The Batman 2 Is Not Connected to the New DC Universe

The biggest DC news following the release of The Batman in 2022 is that the entire franchise is having a major shake-up, with James Gunn now overseeing the franchise's creative future. Just like Todd Philips' Joker, Reeves' The Batman is positioned outside the continuity of the old DCEU (which continued films like Man of SteelJustice League, and Shazam!). The Batman Part II will also remain separate from the new DC Universe, existing in its own timeline and world.

This will alllow Reeves to include any DC characters in the new movie, with many fans speculating who the new villain will be. Paul Dano impressed fans as The Riddler in the first movie, and Barry Keoghan was teased as The Joker in the film's finale. Keoghan has confirmed he will be appearing in The Batman Part II, but Reeves has not confirmed whether he will play a major role in the second film.

James Gunn will be kicking off his new DC Universe with Superman, releasing in 2025. Only one official image has been released from the film. However, as production continues in Cleveland, leaked set photos have showcased David Corenswet's Man of Steel.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. The Batman can be streamed on Max.
