Big casting news has been revealed for fans of Henry Cavill following the end of his run on Netflix's The Witcher. The actor is now set to become a part of another major franchise, which will take him back to the big screen.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill has been cast for a role in Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming Voltron movie. The live-action film is based on the popular mecha anime. Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing the feature film, while the cast will also include newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye. No details have yet been revealed about the plot, or which characters Cavill and Quinn-Toye will be playing. Filming will start this fall in Australia.
The Voltron franchise stems from a story about a group of space explorers who take control of a large robot. Along with spawning multiple anime shows by Toei Animation, there have been American adaptations. This includes the Netflix series Voltron: Legendary Defender, which lasted eight seasons. While there have been previous efforts to make a live-action adaptation, none have ever made any serious traction. It was reported in 2022 that a live-action movie was in development, and it was revealed months later that Amazon had picked up the rights.
Henry Cavill Picks Up Another Big Role
The casting for Cavill comes after the actor wrapped up his three-season run as Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series The Witcher. He is also well known for playing Superman in Man of Steel and other DCEU films, culminating with one last appearance in Black Adam. After he finished his work with those two roles, it was reported that Cavill would be starring in a Warhammer 40K adaptation, though it remains unclear when that project may start filming or be released.
Cavill was recently seen in the films Argylle, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Deadpool & Wolverine. He will also reunite with Guy Ritchie for the upcoming action movie In the Grey, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez. That film will hit theaters on Jan. 17, 2025. Beyond that, Cavill will appear in the lead role in an upcoming Highlander reboot, which is set to start filming in early 2025.
“I'm a lover of the original movies for better or for worse, but, my goodness, me," Cavill teased at CinemaCon about his Highlander reboot, which will be directed by John Wick helmmer Chad Stahelski. "What we are doing with this is… we are going deep into the meat of these characters and their trials and tribulations. If you thought you saw me do swordwork before, you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
A release date has not yet been set for the new Voltron movie.
