Most of the main cast members of The Addams Family, the original live-action feature film from the franchise, has gotten back together again. The special reunion comes 33 years after the release of the original film.
The reunion happened at L.A. Comic Con with several Addams Family cast members offering professional photo-ops for fans. Reunion photos of the cast members present have also been getting shared online. The reunited actors include Anjelica Huston (Morticia Addams), Christopher Lloyd (Uncle Fester Addams), Christina Ricci (Wednesday Addams), Jimmy Workman (Pugsley Addams), and Carel Struycken (Lurch). The only ones missing are Raul Julia (Gomez Addams) and Judith Malina, as they respectively died in 1994 and 2015.
Based on the original comic strip by Charles Addams, The Addams Family was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Caroline Thompson and Larry Wilson wrote the script. The movie followed the members of a kooky family, focusing on the reunion between estranged brothers Gomez and Fester. Along with become a revered and popular film, The Addams Family was a big success at the box office, earning nearly $200 million with a budget of $30 million.
The Addams Family (1991) Was Given a Sequel
The film was given a direct sequel, dubbed Addams Family Values, which was released in 1993. The movie introduced a new addition to the family when Gomez and Morticia have another baby. Carol Kane took over the role of Grandmama for the sequel from Judith Malina, though the other main cast members remained the same. It grossed $111 million against a $47 million budget, making it fall far short of matching the original movie's success. Even so, the film has its fans, many of whom remember the sequel fondly in the same way they do the original feature film.
"[A third film] was never really discussed," Sonnenfeld told Variety about why a third installment wasn't made. "The second one didn’t do well financially at the box office. I think a big problem was the ad campaign. The ad campaign was so identical to the first one that I think people didn’t know what they’d be getting. We didn’t lean into the Pubert of it all, the new baby. Those were the days when sequels didn’t do as well. They usually brought in half or two-thirds of what the originals made."
The franchise continues to evolve and remains popular to this day. In more recent years, there was a pair of animated films that were released in 2019 and 2021. The franchise had also been imagined with separate live-action adaptations in the 1960s and 1990s. In 1998, the standalone film Addams Family Reunion was released, which featured an all-new cast. Jenna Ortega has also been starring in Netflix's Wednesday, a hit series based on the franchise that primarily follows the Wednesday Addams character. The show has an anticipated second season that is currently in development. Ricci appeared in the first season of Wednesday while Lloyd will have a role in Season 2.
