Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey boasts a strong ensemble cast as the Oscar-winning director looks to bring one of his most ambitious projects to life. One member of that cast and a long-time Nolan collaborator, Matt Damon, confirms his involvement with a cheeky nod to the upcoming adaptation.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter while shooting a Super Bowl commercial opposite soccer legend David Beckham, Damon was asked about The Odyssey and any details he could relay about his involvement. Though Damon didn't share any information about The Odyssey, he shared that he would be involved in the project with a pun-filled reply. “I literally have an odyssey in front of me,” he said.
After Nolan's The Odyssey was confirmed at Universal late last year, Damon was the first actor attached to the project, but he's publicly stayed quiet about his reported casting. Damon first worked alongside Nolan in the critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller, Interstellar, starring as a NASA astronaut. He also featured in the Academy Award-winning biographical thriller, Oppenheimer, portraying Lt. Leslie Groves. Damon's role in The Odyssey remains undisclosed. His other upcoming projects include the upcoming Netflix crime thriller, RIP, alongside fellow actor and creative partner Ben Affleck, and the next Jason Bourne sequel.
Christopher Nolan's Next Film Is The Odyssey
Based on the titular novel series penned by Greek author Homer, The Odyssey chronicles the Greek hero and king of Ithaca, Odysseus, and how he made it home following the Trojan War. When Odysseus and his crew traveled from Troy to Ithaca, it took 10 years and tested them in several ways, with the crew eventually dying and Odysseus presumed dead. The Odyssey is one of the oldest pieces of literature, with Homer breaking up the story into 24 books, providing significant source material for Nolan to sift through.
After Damon's involvement in The Odyssey was confirmed, several other A-listers were attached to the project. Spider-Man franchise star Tom Holland is reportedly set to play the lead role, though he admittedly is still trying to get up to speed about what the movie is about. The Odyssey will also feature appearances from Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal and Elliot Page. Universal is putting faith in Nolan once again after the success attained by Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars and became the highest-grossing biopic in history, earning $977 million worldwide.
The Odyssey opens in theaters on Jul. 17, 2026.
