David Leitch is in negotiations to direct a feature adaptation of the hit video game Gears of War for Netflix. Dune scribe Jon Spaihts is penning the script. Leitch and his producing partner Kelly McCormick will produce via their 87North banner along with The Coalition.
The game is set on a planet on the brink of societal collapse when a threat in the form of underground creatures known as the Locust take humanity to the verge of extinction. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity’s last stand.
Netflix had no comment.
The game debuted on Xbox in 2006 and ha sold more than 40 million copies across six installments.
Leitch is set to start production this summer on How to Rob a Bank. The heist thriller for Amazon MGM Studios will star Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai. He is repped by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
