‘Suits LA’ Canceled By NBC After One Season

It’s one and done for NBC’s legal drama Suits LA headlined by Stephen Amell, a spinoff of the long-running USA Network series Suits.

Given the high-profile IP involved, NBC had high expectations for the series from Suits creator Aaron Korsh. They never materialized: after an OK premiere, viewership for the offshoot, which airs on Sunday, has remained low.

That is with NBC and Korsh pulling out all the stops and bringing back popular original cast members to play with the new cast. They included Gabriel Macht, who reprised the role of Harvey Specter in a three-episode arc, Rick Hoffman as eccentric Louis Litt in episode 112 and David Costabile as Daniel Hardman in episode 109.

Additionally, in an effort to bring in more eyeballs, NBC staged a Thursday night Suits LA takeover with a three-hour marathon of repeats on March 27.

There have been modest week-to-week ratings bumps here and there but overall, viewership has remained low, hovering over the 1 million mark on linear in Live+Same Day the last couple of weeks. The series did not become a major streaming draw either, despite the mothership’s recent resurgence on Netflix, which prompted NBC to pursue an offshoot.

This is now the second Suits spinoff to run for one season, following USA’s Pearson.

It’s been a tough day at NBC, which needs to make space on the schedule for NBA coverage last season. Suits LA joins dramas The Irrational and Found and comedies Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez, which also just have been axed.

Suits LA is centered on Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York who has reinvented himself by representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and to survive, he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.

The series also stars Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, Troy Winbush, Rachelle Goulding, Azita Ghanizada, Maggie Grace, and Alice Lee. Matt Letscher, Sofia Pernas and Maggie Grace recur.

Guest stars included John Amos, in his final role, Victoria Justice, Patton Oswalt, Yvette Nicole Brown, Brian Baumgartner, and Enrico Colantoni.

Aaron Korsh is the creator and executive producer of Suits and Suits LA. David Bartis, Doug Liman, Gene Klein, Anton Cropper, Genevieve Sparling, Rick Muirragui, and Jon Cowan also executive produce. The series is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
