Heartstopper’s film finale begins production: ‘We’re back!’

Get your popcorn ready, production has officially begun on the climactic feature-film finale of Heartstopper.

The Netflix adaptation of Alice Oseman’s beloved graphic novels is set to end with an eagerly-anticipated feature-length adaptation of Oseman’s sixth, currently unpublished, book.

Oseman confirmed that filming was underway in a joint-Instagram post with production company See-Saw Films, writing: “We’re back!”

Showrunners confirmed in April that the series charting Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie’s (Joe Locke) relationship would end with a film, noting that filming would take place this summer.

“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman said to The Guardian. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion.”

Connor, who is currently starring in the broadway adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, is set to executive produce the film alongside Locke.

A release date has yet to be confirmed, though Radio Times writer David Craig estimates a “spring 2026” release.

Fans of the series responded with elation over the news that filming had begun, with one fan writing: “Crying tears of joy and sadness [right now]. Joy because you guys are back filming this beautiful story, but sadness because it’s the end.”

It’s a Sin and Doctor Who producer, Russell T Davies, applauded the news, writing “hoorway” alongside a love heart emoji.

Since debuting in 2022, Heartstopper has gained critical acclaim over its three series for its heart-warmingly positive depiction of queer teen romance.

Its most recent season in 2024 adapted volume four of the graphic novel series and depicted several characters exploring sex for the first time, as well as emotionally heavy topics like self harm and eating disorders.

So far, only Connor and Locke are confirmed to return for the feature-length film, though much of the Heartstopper cast will likely return to help conclude the story.
