With great power comes great re-releasability. The original “Spider-Man” trilogy, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, is webbing its way back to theaters once again, with Fathom Entertainment setting fall event screenings in collaboration with Sony Pictures.
Notably, the event also includes a 4K edition of the extended cut of “Spider-Man 2,” titled “Spider-Man 2.1.” This marks the first theatrical release of that version of the superhero sequel, which includes extended and additional scenes.
The engagement begins on Sept. 26 with screenings of “Spider-Man,” with “Spider-Man 2.1” following on Sept. 27 and “Spider-Man 3” on Sept. 28. An encore presentation comes the following weekend, with the trilogy entries respectively playing on Oct. 3, Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. Tickets will be available on July 25.
“The success of ‘Spider-Man’ in 2002 helped launch the modern era of superhero films. To this day, Tobey Maguire’s take on Spider-Man resonates across generations,” said Ray Nutt, chief executive officer of Fathom Entertainment. “At Fathom Entertainment, we celebrate fandom and I am delighted that ‘Spider-Man 2.1’ in 4K will make its theatrical debut, a true gift for longtime fans and a thrilling discovery for new ones.”
The “Spider-Man” trilogy is the latest addition to the Fathom Fan Favorites series, which sees Fathom Entertainment set limited theatrical engagements of beloved classics. “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” kicked off the lineup earlier in June, with “Clueless” following later on. Future engagements include “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Sunset Boulevard,” “The Sound of Music” and “Rocky IV.”
The Fathom engagement is somewhat of an encore, as the Maguire “Spider-Man” films had a limited theatrical engagement at Cinemark locations in April 2024. That was part of a re-release of Sony’s entire live-action “Spider-Man” franchise; Andrew Garfield’s two “Amazing Spider-Man” entries and Tom Holland’s three Marvel Cinematic Universe installments followed in the weeks after.
