Nintendo and Universal register untitled Donkey Kong movie

With the release of Donkey Kong Bananza coming soon and a Donkey Kong theme park section open at Universal Studios, it’s clear that Nintendo is getting serious about DK. Now, it seems like the Donkey Kong train will keep on rolling, as Nintendo has registered what appears to be a new Donkey Kong movie.

This news comes from public copyright records which reveal that Nintendo and Universal Studios have jointly registered what is referred to as “Untitled Donkey Kong Project ;Motion picture”. Of course, this isn’t the same thing as an official announcement, but it would come as no surprise that something like this is in the works. After the huge success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo and Universal seemed ready to work on additional projects together. Since Donkey Kong’s character was already established in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, he seems like a likely candidate to be given the spotlight next time around.

We’re going to have to wait a long time before learning anything more concrete about this project such as a director, plot, or cast (though Seth Rogen would presumably return to voice DK). The Mario sequel is set for release next year, so there could be more DK action there, possibly setting up his own movie. Between that and the live-action Zelda coming in 2027, we’ll have no shortage of Nintendo movies to discuss over the next few years, so stay tuned.
