‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms‘ Renewed For Season 2 Ahead Of ‘GoT’ Prequel’s Premiere On HBO

Ahead of the January 18 premiere of HBO‘s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Game of Thrones prequel has been renewed for a second season to debut in 2027. The announcement was made by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content, at the network’s press presentation Thursday morning in New York.

The adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas was originally slated to premiere in late 2025; the debut was subsequently delayed to January 2026. The slight shift would keep the series out of the HBO-Sky deal, which is coming to an end, and available for the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut almost three years after the series was greenlighted in April 2023. The second season will cut the gap roughly in half with a 2027 debut.

The nature of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms allows for a quicker turnaround vs. fellow prequel House of the Dragon, which releases a new season every 2 years. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also produces shorter seasons consisting of six half-hour episodes each vs 8-10 hourlong episodes a season for HoD.

HBO‘s Head of Drama Series and Films Francesca Orsi told Deadline in February that A Knight of Seven Kingdoms is done on a smaller, more “intimate” scale than the other Game of Thrones series. She also confirmed that the show is still on track for a three-season run spanning Martin’s three Dunk and Egg books.

“You’re going be so impressed by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell as Dunk and Egg, the two leads,” she said at the time. “So much so that we’re already planning on how do we build this for the three seasons in total.”

A Knight of Seven Kingdoms stars Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, Ansell as Egg, Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, Danny Webb, Sam Spruell, Shaun Thomas, Finn Bennett, Edward Ashley, Tanzyn Crawford, Henry Ashton, Youssef Kerkour, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Daniel Monks. Martin and Ira Parker are co-creators/executive produces, with the latter serving as showrunner. Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis also executive produce; Owen Harris and Sarah Adina Smith direct.

Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones and 72 years after House of the DragonA Knight of Seven Kingdom follows two unlikely heroes wandering Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Ansell) … Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends. (You can watch a trailer below, which shows Martin’s ambition for the series to feature “the best jousting sequences that were ever done on film.”)

Along with the A Knight of Seven Kingdom renewal, HBO on Thursday also gave an early Season 4 pickup to House of the Dragon to premiere in 2028. Both series will air on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe,” Orsi said. “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
