New Hugh Jackman Action Thriller 'The Death of Robin Hood' Finally Lands Release Date

A24 has announced a release date for their highly anticipated The Death of Robin Hood. Directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), the film stars Hugh Jackman as an older, grizzled Robin Hood inspired by the 17th-century ballad, Robin Hood's Death. Alongside Jackman, Bill Skarsgård will play Little John, with Jodie Comer, Noah Jupe, Murray Barlett, and Faith Delaney rounding out the cast.

The Death of Robin Hood is officially slated to open in theaters on Jun. 19, 2026, according to A24. It will serve as counterprogramming to Toy Story 5, which opens on the same day. In addition, Focus Features' coming-of-age romantic comedy Girls Like Girls by Hayley Kiyoko debuts that same weekend. Read the plot synopsis for Death of Robin Hood:

Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation.

'The Death of Robin Hood' Enters a Competitive Summer Movie Season

Opening The Death of Robin Hood on the same weekend as Toy Story 5 is a bold move by A24, but it has some merit. The first is that both films will open over Father's Day weekend, and The Death of Robin Hood will certainly position itself as the older fathers' movie offering. A24 found great success last year by releasing the adult-oriented Materialist as counterprogramming to the family-friendly How to Train Your Dragon.

The upcoming A24 film presents a unique interpretation of the legend. The most recent adaptation to open in theaters was 2018's Robin Hood, starring Taron Egerton, which was widely criticized by critics and audiences and ultimately bombed at the box office. While other deconstructions, such as the 2010 film starring Russell Crowe, also didn't hit the mark, perhaps this Logan-inspired take on the material is what audiences want.

Summer 2026 is beginning to take shape, with June becoming a particularly busy month. The week before The Death of Robin Hood sees Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and Paramount's Scary Movie 5 hit theaters, before the following weekend has Supergirl and a fifth Jackass movie, which was only recently added to the summer schedule. Combine that with Masters of the Universe at the beginning of the month, Toy Story 5, and now The Death of Robin Hood, and audiences will have plenty to choose from in June 2026.
