‘God of War’ Live-Action Series Casts ‘Lost’ Alum Sonya Walger as Freya

The “God of War” live-action TV series at Amazon Prime Video has cast Sonya Walger in the recurring role of Freya, Variety has learned.

Walger will appear in the series take on the popular video games alongside series leads Ryan Hurst as Kratos, the titular god of war, and Callum Vinson as his young son, Atreus. Additional cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

The official character description for Freya states she is “a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s (Patinkin) ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”

Walger is perhaps best known for playing Penny Widmore in the hit ABC series “Lost,” first joining the show in its second season and remaining with its through its sixth and final season. She recently starred in the Apple TV alt-history series “For All Mankind” in the role of astronaut Molly Cobb. She has also been in shows like the Amazon series “Night Sky” as well as “The Catch” and “Get Shorty.” Her new novel, “Wifehouse,” is due for release in April via Union Square Books.

As previously reported, the series will pick up with the story of the two most recent “God of War” games, in which Kratos must raise his ten-year old son Atreus while battling gods of the Norse pantheon. Per the logline, “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

“God of War” has received a two-season order at Amazon. Ronald D. Moore is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “God of War” under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Production is now underway in Vancouver.

Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes of “God of War.” Maril Davis of Tall Ship also executive produces alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers on the series. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Tall Ship is under an overall deal at Sony TV.
