When the Fellowship assembles for "The Hunt for Gollum" (well, some of them, at least), fans will be in for a significant change from those "The Lord of the Rings" movies they remember. Star Andy Serkis has been charged with telling a brand-new story set between the events of "The Hobbit" and the "Rings" trilogy, which will require a bit of finessing when it comes to the cast. Both Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are expected to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Frodo, respectively, along with Serkis as Gollum himself. But, after weeks of feverish speculation, we now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that one key cast member won't be joining in on the fun.
In an interview tied to Serkis' upcoming "Animal Farm" adaptation, ScreenRant received confirmation straight from the director that Aragorn, the fan-favorite Ranger of the North and future King of Gondor played by Viggo Mortensen, will be recast. While Knight Edge Media broke the news about this back in December 2025, Serkis has remained mum on the matter until now. As he cautiously told ScreenRant:
"I don't know what's out there at the moment, but I know there's a lot of speculation, but let's just say we are recasting the role, and we are on the way to finding someone."
That's sure to come as a disappointment for fans who first fell in love with the rugged character all those years ago, but the writing has been on the wall for quite some time now. The in-between setting of this story naturally lends itself to a younger version of Aragorn, though the creative team previously indicated that they would've preferred having Mortensen back. For now, viewers will have to get used to the idea of someone else stepping into his shoes.
The hunt for the next Aragorn is well underway for The Hunt for Gollum
For the first time in over 20 years, "The Lord of the Rings" fans can now look forward to a new face taking over the role of Aragorn, son of Arathorn. Few actors can claim to have as much of a foothold on their character as Viggo Mortensen has on his, even considering the fact that he himself was a product of some last-minute recasting back when director Peter Jackson was first ushering his movies into production well over two decades ago. Now, the search is officially underway — and likely has been for quite some time — for his replacement in the upcoming "The Hunt for Gollum."
As for other aspects of the film, Andy Serkis has good reason to be optimistic that he can pull this off. Referring to the production as somewhat of a "tightrope" between telling a new story and hearkening back to the lore of the "Rings" trilogy, he went on to reassure fans that, "The entire 'Lord of the Rings' team who worked on the originals are reassembled, for a start." That includes Jackson as a producer, along with returning writer Philippa Boyens and both Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Of course, no less a talent than Kate Winslet has also been cast in a mysterious role as well. Serkis went on to describe the general tone of this adventure as:
"I think it'll be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the lore and world of Middle-earth that we all love. You've got to remember that, for some people, this will be their first Middle-earth film. So, that's why it's been such an interesting journey."
From Gollum's mouth to our ears. "The Hunt for Gollum" is scheduled to hit theaters December 17, 2027.
