Think of the new 2022 Volkswagen Taos as a shrunken Tiguan with the face of an Atlas—the design of the subcompact Taos fits right in as part of the Volkswagen SUV family. In terms of size, the Taos' exterior dimensions are similar to the Kia Seltos and Subaru Crosstrek, slotting it on the larger side of its segment. Compared to the Tiguan, the Taos is 9.3 inches shorter in length. At least for now, S, SE, and SEL trims will be offered, with standard FWD and available AWD.
What We Think
The Volkswagen Taos is a mixed bag if there ever was one. In our First Drive, we praised the crossover's spacious back seat and cargo area. Better yet, the interior materials make the Taos feel a class above. Fully digital displays and streamlined controls add to the cabin's appeal.
Driving the FWD Taos, we appreciated the model's crisp acceleration and smooth transmission shifts. But it's a completely different experience in the AWD version. Paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission instead of the FWD model's eight-speed automatic, the AWD Taos accelerates gently from a stop only to surge ahead abruptly a few seconds later. This behavior is particularly disadvantageous when making left turns against traffic. And although the Taos benefits from accurate steering, it suffers from an overly soft suspension that, when combined with its tall driving position, results in body lean.
Despite its refined interior, which is impressive, especially for a subcompact SUV, there is room for improvement. Simply put, the AWD model needs to deliver a better driving experience if it wants to be a compelling option in the segment. And while the base S trim offers a reasonable amount of bang for your buck, the next level up starts to get expensive, costing more than $28,400, and the top-of-the-line trim goes from more than $32,600.

What's Under the Hood?
All 2022 Taos models are powered by a 1.5-liter turbo-four with 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. FWD models utilize a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission while AWD-equipped examples get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. When we tested a FWD Taos, it scrambled to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds.
Safety
Volkswagen's driver assistance suite, dubbed IQ.Drive, is available on all Taos trims. This bundles together forward collision warning, front automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Automatic high beams are available only on models with adaptive headlights.
Technology
The Taos will offer an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. All variants get a digital gauge cluster as standard. More expensive variants get interior ambient lighting and an eight-speaker Beats audio system.
What is the Basecamp Accessory Line?

Recommended Trim
The Taos is an appealing little package, until you look at the price tag. A nicely equipped Taos SEL can set you back around $35,000, which is exorbitantly expensive for the subcompact segment. Our advice would be to stay away from the SEL and go for the S or SE.
