'I Hope It's Great': Jason Bourne 6 Gets Promising Update From Matt Damon

Jason Bourne 6 is still in the early stages of development but actor Matt Damon has good reason to believe the film will be a strong addition to the franchise.

More than seven years have passed since the release of the last Jason Bourne film, which saw Matt Damon returning after The Bourne Legacy cast Jeremy Renner as the main protagonist. The Bourne films are comparable to the James Bond movies but took the spy thriller route littered with heavy stakes. The Jason Bourne film franchise is also inseparable from Matt Damon and his portrayal of the fugitive spy at this point, so it's understandable why the actor is concerned about reprising the character in future movies. Damon was just as reserved in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert but expressed his excitement to give the sequel another go.

Damon said he's not updated with the film's development progress but is confident that the project is helmed by the right person. "No details have been given to me," he clarified. "There's a great director, named Edward Berger, who directed All Quiet on the Western Front. I don't know if you saw it, it came out recently. Fantastic. A German director, he's wonderful. And he said he had an idea." it's yet to be revealed if that idea involves a continuation of Bourne's overarching story or a new one similar to The Bourne Legacy. "I would love to work with [Berger]!" Damon continued. "So he's working on it, so I'm looking, I'm as anxious as you are to see if this thing – I hope it's great, and that we can do it."

Matt Damon Says His Time Is Almost Up As Jason Bourne

Damon also admitted he's only able to play Jason Bourne for so long, which is concerning. The first Bourne film, The Bourne Identity, was released in 2002; Damon was 32 years old when he first played the role, so he's pushing in his 50s when the next installment comes out. This wouldn't be a problem, as actors like Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington, and Keanu Reeves continue to deliver in hard-hitting action franchises like TakenThe Equalizer, and John Wick movies. Still, Damon acknowledged he would eventually have to pass the torch to a new actor who would either take over the role or portray a new Operation Treadstone operative. "At a certain point, someone is going to need to take it over. I'm not getting any younger," Damon added.

The actor was previously candid about his experience filming The Bourne Ultimatum, which according to him suffered from an incomplete and incohesive script. That film was also hindered by production issues associated with screenwriter Tony Gilroy, who clashed with Damon regarding the overall treatment of the script. Gilroy went on to direct The Bourne Legacy but Damon opted out along with director Paul Greengrass. Damon and Greengrass were able to continue the mainline story in 2016's Jason Bourne, which was a return to form for the franchise.

Jason Bourne 6 does not yet have a release date.
