Julia Garner to play Shalla-Bal version of Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four

Julia Garner is going from the Ozarks to outer space.

The Emmy-winning Ozark actress has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Fantastic Four movie, EW has confirmed. The 30-year-old actress will play Shalla-Bal, a version of the classic comics character the Silver Surfer.

WandaVision's Matt Shakman is directing the new Fantastic Four, which will bring the legendary comics family into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cast is led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

Little is known about Garner's role, except that she'll be playing a version of Shalla-Bal. In Marvel Comics lore, Shalla-Bal was the interstellar love interest of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer, but she herself took up the mantle in other stories. Deadline Hollywood first reported Garner's casting.

Garner is best known for starring as Ruth Langmore on Netflix's drug drama Ozark, winning multiple Emmys for the role. Her other screen credits include Modern LoveThe Assistant, and Inventing Anna, and she's set to appear in Leigh Whannell's 2025 horror film Wolf Man.

Production on Fantastic Four is expected to begin later this year, with the film set to hit theaters July 25, 2025.
