Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming at Marvel Studios, recently addressed rumors that two Disney+ series, Ironheart and Wonder Man, had been quietly canceled.
Marvel Studios has been making significant strides in expanding its universe beyond the silver screen, with projects like Ironheart and Wonder Man in the works. However, these Disney+ series have been the subject of speculation regarding their production status. Ironheart commenced filming in 2022 but faced delays and was ultimately removed from the release schedule. Similarly, Wonder Man was announced in June 2022 but soon encountered rumors suggesting it might not move forward.
However, Winderbaum recently provided reassuring news during a conversation with Agents of Fandom. He assured fans that both Ironheart and Wonder Man are still in the works, stating, "Yeah, absolutely. We're editing both of those shows as we speak." He also praised the series, describing them as "spectacular," "amazing," and "different," emphasizing Marvel's ability to explore exciting corners of its vast universe. While Winderbaum did not disclose specific release dates, his confirmation that the shows are progressing through the post-production process has brought relief to some fans.
Ironheart, starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, is a series created by Chinaka Hodge based on the Marvel character originally developed by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato. Thorne first portrayed Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she was introduced as a tech prodigy who manages to replicate Iron Man's technology and is allowed to keep it. The series features an impressive ensemble cast, including Manny Montana, Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Alden Ehrenreich, with rumors suggesting that Sacha Baron Cohen will also make his MCU debut in the series.
Wonder Man, on the other hand, will follow the story of Simon Williams, a movie star turned superhero, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Abdul-Mateen II, known for his role as Black Manta in DC's Aquaman films, will be taking on his third superhero role in this 10-episode series. Joining him will be Ben Kingsley, reprising his role as Trevor Slattery, another in-universe actor in the MCU. Though plot details are scarce at the moment, the show is said to be influenced by the character's comic book origins, suggesting that Wonder Man's background will remain intact in the adaptation.
Marvel Fans' worries about the future of the shows reached new heights after Disney CEO Bob Iger's comments at a recent Morgan Stanley Conference. Iger admitted that the studios have been secretly cancelling movies, leading to speculation about the fate of various projects across the industry. However, Winderbaum's confirmation that Ironheart and Wonder Man are still in production has provided some reassurance to fans. He also previously explained that the delay in Ironheart's release is attributed to Disney's strategy of spreading out its Marvel exclusives rather than any issues with the series itself. While the wait for these shows may be longer than initially expected, fans can take comfort in knowing that Marvel Studios remains committed to bringing these characters and their stories to life on Disney+.
Marvel's Ironheart and Wonder Man currently have no release date.
