What If...? director Bryan Andrews recently teased the release window for the upcoming third season of the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe animated series.
Speaking with ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast, Andrews revealed that What If...? Season 3 could be released on Disney+ by the end of 2024, although "that would be [a] tight" turnaround. "They move stuff around. Every time I thought it was like, 'Oh, it's going to be this!' It's like, 'It's going to move a little bit!' So, even I would hate to say something and have people's hopes come up and then have them be dashed because the beast of production and when things move around," Andrews explained. "I thought that it could come out at the end of the year in 2024 possibly, but that would be tight. There's some other group of people that are masterminding when things [release] and they're moving things on the board, and I don't know where we exist on that at this moment."
Marvel Has Already Teased What If...? Season 3
On Dec. 30, 2023, the same day that the final episode of What If...? Season 2 dropped on Disney+, Marvel Studios released a sneak peek at Season 3 on its X account. The three-minute first look clip featured a scene from an upcoming episode featuring the Winter Soldier, the Red Guardian, Bill Foster and Ranger Morales (who will be voiced by Barbie's America Ferrera). What If...? Season 3 will be the first season to not feature A. C. Bradley as head writer. She recently confirmed her departure from the series on X, revealing that her final work on What If...? was in the episode that received the sneak peek. "This ep is my absolute FAVORITE," she teased in her X post.
What If...? explores alternate timelines and universes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The animated series is led by Jeffrey Wright, who appears in every episode as The Watcher, with guest appearances by returning MCU favorites like Hayley Atwell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karen Gillan, Jon Favreau, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Kat Dennings, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Cate Blanchett, among others. What If...? has also introduced new, original characters to the MCU like Kahhori, a Native American character voiced by Devery Jacobs who gains superpowers from the Space Stone/Tesseract.
More MCU Animated Series Are on the Way
What If...? may have been Marvel Studios' first foray into animated storytelling, but it won't be its last. A Marvel Zombies series, based on a Season 1 What If...? episode, is also in production, as is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, a new Spider-Man series that will follow Peter Parker juggling his duties as Spider-Man and as a freshman (and later sophomore) in school. X-Men '97, a continuation of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, and the Black Panther spinoff series Eyes of Wakanda are also in production, with Marvel Studios revealing that both series will hit Disney+ in 2024.
The first two seasons of What If...? are streaming on Disney+.
