According to Constantine director Francis Lawrence, the long-discussed sequel is now ‘closer than ever.’
Announced in 2022, there have been some fears over whether or not the long-awaited Constantine 2 would still happen. Not long after it was announced, a new DC Universe slate was announced, and there was no mention of the film. It was then clarified shortly after that the film was still in the works, but then another round of silence happened. This was followed by one more scare when it was stated the sequel was being ‘re-evaluated.’
The last update came in Oct. 2023, when Francis Lawrence, the director of the original film, said, “So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers strike. And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control.”
“Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen. The script has to be written. [But we’re] really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated-R version of it.”
Now, the latest update again comes from Lawrence. Speaking with Collider, he said, “I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it.”
While not confirmed as of yet, this will more than likely fall into the Elseworlds branding along with The Batman: Part II and Joker: Folie à Deux.
Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to pen the screenplay and produce through his Weed Road Pictures. Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella are also set as producers. Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Erwin Stoff are set as executive producers. Francis Lawrence will return to direct.
Warner Bros Pictures Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are said to have spearheaded the deal.
