'The Rings of Power' Has Finally Been Renewed for Season 3, Major Plot Details Revealed

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has finally gotten the announcement fans have long waited for. Although the writers behind the series have been working on a proposed third season for quite some time, Prime Video had not officially renewed the fantasy series. However, The Rings of Power fans can finally rejoice, as the streamer has officially announced that Season 3 is on the way, and exciting plot details have already made their way online.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Prime Video has not only renewed The Rings of Power for Season 3, but the outlet has a logline that describes a major plot change for the upcoming season. The upcoming season will feature a significant time jump, pushing the setting forward to the peak of the conflict between Sauron and Middle-earth during his quest to craft the One Ring. Meanwhile, Prime Video has officially announced several directors for the new season, including Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Stefan Schwartz. Check out the synopsis below:

“Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

The aforementioned time jump for The Rings of Power Season 3 puts the series on a direct, and perhaps quicker, collision course towards the show's endgame. As the Dark Lord Sauron continues to amass power, so does his ultimate mission of crafting the One Ring and setting the War of the Last Alliance in motion. An all-out war between the major factions of Middle-earth and the evil forces ruled by Sauron, it seems The Rings of Power is working double time to get to the final battle. Could the original five-season commitment be in trouble? Time will only tell, but at least fans can get excited about more episodes of The Rings of Power.

'The Rings of Power' Season 3 Is Officially on the Way

Although Amazon did not give a premiere date for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, they revealed a few behind-the-scenes details. As of this writing, the show is currently in pre-production, and is looking to begin principal photography sometime this spring. The timeline for the show's return on Prime Video could be between late 2026 or 2027, but it all depends on how smoothly production goes, and if strikes will further delay it like the second season. The late announcement for Season 3 may be a product of the relatively big audience numbers paling in comparison with the first season, and among other streaming shows.

Behind the scenes, while Charlotte Brändström and Sanaa Hamri both have plenty of experience in Middle-earth having directed several episodes, a newcomer will join the directing crew. The Rings of Power Season 3 will enlist the help of Stefan Schwartz. However, he's no newbie when it comes to directing television. Not only has he helmed episodes of The Boys, but he has had his hands on The Walking DeadThe Americans, and Luthor, among many other credits.
