Here’s a big one just in time for San Diego Comic-Con.
HBO Max is progressing with its Booster Gold TV series and has attached Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins to write the pilot. If taken to series, we understand the plan is for Jenkins to show-run.
Coming off the back of a landmark Emmy nominations day for The Penguin, Booster Gold could therefore become one of Warner Bros. Discovery‘s next big DC Comics TV adaptations.
Created by Dan Jurgens, the protagonist, real name Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is a member of the Justice League born in Gotham City who attends university on a football scholarship. He is expelled for gambling and becomes a superhero, although continues to irritate others with his obsession for fame and wealth. His nickname came via Ronald Reagan after he saved the former POTUS.
DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the development on a huge slate more than two years back that kicked off the new DC Universe, featuring the likes of the Wonder Woman reboot and Paradise Lost. At that point, they said the fan favorite would “use basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in the present day.”
But progress has been slow. The DC bosses were reported recently saying the project had lost its initial showrunner. They also scotched rumors for the time being that Kumail Nanjiani would play Booster.
If Booster Gold is taken to series, HBO Max will resume a relationship with Jenkins, whose quirky pirate romcom Our Flag Means Death was axed after two seasons in Jan 2024, subsequently failing to find another home. At the time of cancellation, Jenkins said the comedy starring Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby had “come to a premature end,” while praising HBO boss Casey Bloys and his team for being “incredible champions of this show.” Jenkins is also the creator of TBS sci-fi series People of Earth.
The news drops just in time for San Diego Comic-Con, where DC TV properties will be a talking point. HBO Max is meanwhile celebrating the success of The Penguin, which nearly hit a record comic book Emmy nominations figure last week as it scooped 24 including for Limited Anthology Series and for leads Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
Deadline has reached out to HBO Max for comment on Booster Gold.
Last month, it was reported that Gunn is considering TV spinoffs for Superman characters such as Edi Gathegi‘s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo‘s Jimmy Olsen.
