Tom Cruise might be the biggest movie star in the world at the moment, but it seems that doesn't mean studios are still not reluctant to fulfill his big-budget action endeavors. Despite the Mission: Impossible franchise ending earlier this year, Cruise is not slowing down anytime soon, as he has an undersea thriller set up with Doug Liman at the helm as his next major project. However, it seems fans will have to wait longer for it to come to fruition, as the major studio backing has seemingly pulled out.
According to Puck, Warner Bros. has decided to pause development on Deeper, which was set to star Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas. Per the report, this decision was made due to the production budget, which was reportedly $275 million. It is not clear if Warner Bros. will move on from the film entirely, but it is said that Cruise is now shopping the project to other studios. There might be a chance that the undersea thriller still gets made, but perhaps there is some major hesitancy due to the budget and the fact that the last Mission: Impossible film, which reportedly cost around $300 million to make, failed to turn a profit.
Cruise and Warner Bros. were poised to continue a working relationship after signing on to lead Alejandro González Iñárritu's next film, which is being released by the studio on October 2, 2026. If Deeper gets made elsewhere, a good bet might be Paramount Pictures, who recently released both Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick. However, it seems Universal Pictures is high on the list of potential suitors. Deeper follows an astronaut who goes on a deep sea mission that has him encounter a dangerous force in an ocean trench. The project has seen multiple actors and directors attached since its announcement in 2016, but Cruise is determined to get this iteration out of the deep end and into production this year.
Alejandro González Iñárritu Teases His Star-Studded Film With Tom Cruise
Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Birdman and The Revenant, is headed to a new genre for his upcoming film starring Tom Cruise. The Mission: Impossible actor won't be hanging off an airplane this time around, or conducting any other elaborate stunts (that we know of). Instead, Cruise will flex his dramatic and comedic acting talents in a film that Iñárritu describes as a "brutal comedy" that explores the actor's unique range as a performer.
"No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It's insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f*cking impressed and happy.
"He has an incredible sense of passion. It's a brutal comedy. It's a wild comedy of human nature. It's scary and funny. It's beautiful. I will start editing next week."
In addition to Cruise, the untitled film stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Emma D'Arcy, Riz Ahmed, and Jesse Plemons. It is set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
