New Arrivals for HBO Max July 2025

The Max streaming service (which will soon be rebranded back to its original name, HBO Max) is going to be a hot spot for cinephiles this summer. Leading the HBO Max July 2025 list of new arrivals is Sinners (2025), the cultural phenomenon that has now become the highest-grossing original movie of this decade so far. Writer-director Ryan Coogler, who built a renowned name for himself with Fruitvale Station, Creed, and his two Black Panther blockbusters in the MCU, had never actually made a feature film that was 100% his own original idea before Sinners. This makes its widespread success all the more noteworthy.

Part Jim Crow-period drama and part survival horror movie, Sinners weaves classic vampire lore with the racial politics of the 1930s South. The power of the Blues is the binder that holds Ryan Coogler’s ambitious narrative together. Audiences follow a pair of lucrative gangsters called the Smoke Stack twins (both played by Michael B. Jordan) as they return to their home in the Mississippi Delta to start a juke joint. Their get-rich-quick schemes involve their young cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), nicknamed “Preacher Boy.” Sammie is an aspiring blues guitarist and singer whose talents reach across space and time. This gift turns out to also be a curse, as his music accidentally summons vampires to the twins’ new club.

Sinners boasts a jam-packed supporting cast, including Hailee SteinfeldDelroy LindoWunmi Mosaku, and Jack O’Connell (who recently appeared in 28 Years Later). However, this won’t be the only star-studded cast making waves on HBO Max in July 2025. Also arriving this month are two recent theatrical releases from the beloved indie distributor A24, each showcasing a unique blend of comedy and horror. The first is Opus, which hits HBO Max on July 11, 2025. Led by Ayo Edibiri and John MalkovichOpus follows the peculiar mystery surrounding a global pop star and his sinister cult of fans. Malkovich plays the musician in question, Alfred Moretti, and even supplies the movie with a few original songs sung by himself!

HBO Max subscribers can then look forward to the streaming debut of Death of a Unicorn on July 25, 2025. A father-daughter duo, played by Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, accidentally run over a small unicorn while on their way to a business summit in a remote nature reserve. Things get complicated when Rudd’s rich boss, Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant), plans to use the beast’s magical properties for his own nefarious needs. However, this baby unicorn isn’t actually dead, and it’s got two monstrous parents who want it back. Death of a Unicorn has got all the creature feature horror one could ask for, and Will Poulter and Anthony Carrigan bring the laughs as the movie’s comedic MVPs.

In terms of HBO originals, Rage (Furia) and Billy Joel: And So It Goes are the top two recommendations for July 2025. The first is a new HBO original series from Spain, which centers on the intertwining narratives of five women whose complex lives have a butterfly effect on one another. The second is a new HBO original documentary on the titular musician, Billy Joel. Fans will know that Joel was recently diagnosed with a brain disorder. While he has cancelled all upcoming concerts, Joel has confirmed that he has no plans to retire, choosing to instead focus on his treatment for now. Featuring never-before-seen performances and archival footage, And So It Goes is a must-see for fans.

HBO Max’s streaming library is welcoming several exciting additions in July 2025, too. For starters, the original Mortal Kombat movies, along with the 2021 reboot, will now be available to stream at the top of the month. This is excellent news for fans eagerly awaiting the theatrical release of Mortal Kombat 2, scheduled for later this October. Horror aficionados will next be pleased to see that James Wan’s Insidious, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, and both the original and remake of The Amityville Horror are all getting added to the streamer. Finally, the critically acclaimed, A24-produced black comedy-drama from Zambian filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, is not to be missed when it arrives on July 4, 2025.
