Amanda Seyfried's Update on Mamma Mia! 3 Will Make You a Dancing Queen

Mamma Mia! Here we go again?!

In an interview with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival, Amanda Seyfried was asked by a producer off-camera if Mamma Mia 3 was still in the works.

Seyfried played Sophie Sheridan, a young woman who invites three men to her wedding to discover which one is her father, in the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, and reprised her role 10 years later in the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! in 2018. The original movie made over $610 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of that year.

At first, the Mean Girls actress stuttered a bit, then reluctantly said, “Yeah, it is.” Afterwards, she starts making faces, before cautiously adding, “I think” and laughing.

The 39-year-old actress mentioned that many of her fellow Mamma Mia! castmates, such as Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan and even Meryl Streep, have expressed interest in making a third film, because it was their way of “marketing and getting support.” Then she further explained that big movies like that “are all about studio timing.”

Seyfried then revealed that the timing of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! was connected to Wicked, which instead premiered in November 2024, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

“I remember they did ‘Mamma Mia 2’ instead of Wicked…They could only do one big movie at that time, so we ended up sliding into that,” Seyfried explained. “So it’s actually about silly things like that, and story, silly things like that.”

The actress first gained attention in her role as Karen Smith in the 2004 film Mean Girls, then broke out to lead roles in musicals like Mamma Mia! and its 2018 sequel. Known for her incredible range, Seyfried has starred in romantic dramas such as Les Misérables and Dear Johnthrillers like Jennifer’s Body and Gone, and biographical films, most notably earning an Oscar nomination for her role as Marion Davies in Mank. She also won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for portraying Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout.

Seyfried is currently at the Toronto International Film Festival for the North American premiere of The Testament of Ann Lee, a musical drama centered on Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shaker movement, who was hailed by her followers as the female Christ. This movie also stars Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson and Christopher Abbott.

So far, a theatrical release for The Testament of Ann Lee has not yet been announced. The film has only premiered at several film festivals.
