Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Michael, the upcoming biopic charting the story of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Jackson is played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, and Antoine Fuqua directs. The trailer features the famed singer in the studio with Quincy Jones (played by Kendrick Sampson). Songs featured include “Thriller” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”
The synopsis reads: Michael tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.
The pic also stars Miles Teller as Jackson’s attorney and adviser John Branca, Colman Domingo as his father Joe Jackson, Nia Long as his mother Katherine Jackson, Jessica Sula as his sister LaToya Jackson, Larenz Tate as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier as pioneering music executive Suzanne de Passe and Kat Graham as Diana Ross.
The biopic is set to be released in theaters on April 24. There has been plenty of speculation about its release and delays, including reporting that the movie would be split in two, but no update on that today. It’s not clear from the synopsis whether the film will touch on any of the controversies that met the superstar later in life.
John Logan wrote the script. Branca, Graham King and John McClain serve as producers. David B. Householter serves as executive producer. The trailer will run in theaters from next week ahead of the new Now You See Me film.
