The Disney live-action Moana remake has received some great news from Dwayne Johnson.
Disney is making a live-action version of Moana that is scheduled to be released in United States theaters next summer. Directed by Thomas Kail, the film will see Johnson play Maui, the character he voiced in the original animated movie and the sequel, Moana 2, that came out last year.
What did Dwayne Johnson say about the live-action Moana Disney remake?
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Johnson announced the live-action Moana Disney remake had just wrapped production.
“Playing Maui has been the gift of a lifetime. Growing up as a Samoan — half Samoan and half black — in Samoan culture, Polynesian culture? We’re proud people,” Johnson said. “Proud of our culture. And what Moana has represented is a really awesome global embrace of Polynesian culture, our values and our qualities and our pride and our mana.
“Today’s Tuesday. Just this past Friday, around 8:00 pm, we officially wrapped the live-action version of Moana, so we can’t wait. This upcoming summer, you guys will see live-action Moana, and it’s going to be pretty cool. I spent an entire week shooting ‘You’re Welcome,’ and the singing and the choreography is crazy.”
There were previously reports that the live-action Moana movie had wrapped production all the way back in November 2024. It’s unclear whether those reports were inaccurate, if Johnson was potentially referring to reshoots when saying that production just wrapped, if he meant he’d seen a cut of the movie when saying that it had “officially wrapped,” or what the case may be.
Nevertheless, audiences will get a chance to see the finished product when it arrives on July 10, 2026, from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to Johnson, the cast of the movie includes Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
