Steven Spielberg is ready to reclaim his crown as the king of the blockbuster. Sure, he’s spent most of the past decade making respectable adult-driven dramas, with the occasional family-friendly fare thrown in (we do not speak of Ready Player One), but now and then, he needs to remind the world that he reinvented Hollywood and you should respect his genius. Jaws turned 50 this year so you’ll forgive him for flexing a little.
We’re getting a new Spielberg film next June. Little is known about it except that it’s reportedly a sci-fi fare, possibly about aliens, and it’s written by David Koepp, a frequent Spielberg collaborator who wrote Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The cast includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, and Colin Firth. Universal has it scheduled for a June 12 release. It’s rare for us to get a movie this secretive, even this early in the process. We live in an age where the trades report every agonizing detail of a film from the moment it’s greenlit. So, the prospect of Spielberg being this enigmatic is fascinating for a number of reasons. Now, we have our first hints of what the movie’s about. Well, ‘hint’ is a strong word.
Mysterious billboards for the new Spielberg film appeared in Los Angeles and in Times Square, New York. They feature an upside-down eye peeking out of a silhouette of a bird, with the accompanying text, ‘All will be disclosed. Spielberg. 06.12.26.’ Spooky.

This is some old-school movie marketing and I love it.
How exciting to have the chance to build up hype for something without having it all spoiled months in advance. Very few filmmakers get the chance to do stuff like this. Christopher Nolan is one rare exception, and so is Spielberg. We’ve no idea if this is original or based on something yet, but even if it’s an adaptation, it’s still unusual to see something on this scale get this treatment. Hollywood has only gotten less comfortable with risks in recent years, and now you have the chumps at Netflix all but ready to shut down the cinematic experience altogether. Can Spielberg make magic happen with a more retro approach to the subgenre he helped to create, or has he lost control of his monster?
I’m not a betting woman but I’d hazard a guess that we’ll get a trailer and title drop for this film in the next few weeks. What major movies are on the calendar that are set to draw a massive audience and would be a consistent fit for a new Spielberg teaser?
