‘Lord Of The Flies’: Netflix Sets Premiere Date For Jack Thorne Series

Lord of the Flies is coming to Netflix on May 4.

As we revealed last month, the streamer bagged U.S. rights to the Jack Thorne-penned series from Sony Pictures Television, beating competition from a number of other potential suitors.

The BBC and Stan limited series is an adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel. It tells the story of a group of young boys who find themselves stranded on a tropical island and attempt to remain civil by organizing themselves, led by Ralph (Winston Sawyers), who is supported by the group’s intellectual, Piggy (David McKenna). However, Jack (Lox Pratt) challenges his leadership and begins to draw other boys away, sending them on a course from hope to tragedy.

Also starring the four-hour show are Ike Talbut, Thomas Connor, twins Noah and Cassius Flemyng, Cornelius Brandreth and Tom Page-Turner, alongside an ensemble of more than 30 boys who play the desert island camp’s “biguns” and “littluns.”

Sony Pictures Television-backed Eleven and One Shoe Films made the show, with Emmy-winning Adolescence co-writer Thorne attached. Marc Munden directs, with music from Oscar winner Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve and Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell exec produced for Eleven, Thorne did the same for One Shoe and Munden was also an EP. Wilson and Campbell recently exited Eleven after two decades.

Surprisingly, this is the first TV adaptation of Golding’s seminal novel, though it was made as a film in 1963 by Peter Brook; in 1975 as a Filipino survival pic; and in 1990 by Harry Hook.

Lord of the Flies is one of several new international additions to Netflix’s U.S. line-up. Original series such as Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, the Nordic noir based on author Nesbø’s novel series, are also set to launch, while further upcoming originals include The Empress Season 3, Lupin part 4 and Quasimodo.
