The Sonic the Hedgehog 4 cast continues to grow, with a new report suggesting that a high-profile actor has joined the animated film. The upcoming movie, hitting theaters next year, and its predecessors are based on Sega’s popular video game franchise. The film series, which launched in 2020, has so far collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office.
Sir Ben Kingsley joins Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in key role
Fresh off his leading role in Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man, Oscar-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley has reportedly booked his next acting gig in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The news comes from reputed industry insider Jeff Sneider, who shared on TheInSneider that the actor has secured a key role. However, its unclear who he is playing in the film.
Kingsley’s reported casting follows that of Kristen Bell, tapped to voice the pink hammer-wielding hedgehog, Amy Rose. However, the former’s casting is yet to be officially confirmed by the filmmakers.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 director Jeff Fowler recently confirmed that production on the sequel started. He shared a photo on social media showing him standing with his back to the camera, holding a clapperboard in one hand and Amy Rose’s hammer in the other. “Ready 4 Action,” he captioned the post.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 dashes into theaters on March 19, 2027. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara will produce the film. Plot details for the movie are being kept under wraps. However, based on Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s post-credits scene, where Metal Sonic robots pursued Sonic until Amy Rose stepped in to save him, the film will likely explore the mystery behind these robots.
Ben Schwartz will reprise his role of Sonic alongside Kristen Bell’s Amy Rose. The rest of the cast is unconfirmed as of this writing. However, Idris Elba and Jim Carrey have expressed interest in reprising their roles of Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik.
Speaking to ComicBook, the former stated, “I would say I’d love to do it. Any chance to understand the characters a little bit more, in the different episodes … If [the filmmakers are] in, I’m down.”
Meanwhile, Jim Carrey told Cinema Today he was “definitely open” to returning as Dr. Robotnik. He added, “I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘That sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me”
