The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could have fans saying 'Wahoo!' en route to the theater, as the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is rumored to include some fresh faces. However, the three new characters will be familiar to fans of the popular video game franchise.
A synopsis for the film, shared by cinema operator Cinepolis El Salvador on Instagram, revealed the inclusion of some new characters set to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will see Chris Pratt return as the lovable titular plumber. "New threats, old rivalries, and a battle that reaches the stars. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi join forces against Wario and Bowser Jr," a translation of the post reads, alongside the sequel's first official teaser.
If true, Super Mario fans will be getting a treat with the features of Yoshi, Wario and Bowser Jr., three characters many requested to be included in the sequel. Wario, Mario's evil and twisted doppelgänger, was arguably the biggest omission from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with acclaimed Danny DeVito and Pedro Pascal mentioned as potential candidates to portray him.
Wario would be a surprising inclusion in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as he's not involved in any of the Super Mario Galaxy games. Yoshi, a dinosaur who serves as Mario's trusted steed, didn't appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But a green Yoshi egg appeared in the film's post-credits scene, hinting at his future involvement. Bowser Jr. is the son of Dark Lands' ruler Bowser (Jack Black), who was defeated by Mario in the first film.
Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures had long intended to make a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, considering its anticipated commercial return. The film saw Pratt voice Mario, a controversial choice for some fans who believed his voice wasn't the best fit for the popular character. Charlie Day voiced Mario's brother, Luigi.
Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogen played Princess Peach and Donkey Kong, respectively, in the first big-screen adaptation of Super Mario since the ill-fated live-action iteration released in 1993. The long-time voice of Mario and Luigi, Charles Martinet, also featured in a cameo as Giuseppe, their father.
Though it earned mixed critical reviews (59% on Rotten Tomatoes), The Super Mario Bros. Movie comfortably became the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time ($1.361 billion worldwide). The film also secured several accolades, including three Golden Globe nominations and a Saturn Award nod. Illumination confirmed development of the sequel in March 2024.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Promises Deep Cuts
Based on the 2007 video game of the same name, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie welcomes back Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, with Keegan Michael-Key (Toad) and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) also returning to the cast. While there is no confirmed synopsis, the Super Mario Galaxy game is set in outer space, where Mario travels through various galaxies to collect Power Stars by completing missions or defeating a boss.
Players embark on extraterrestrial missions as Mario to rescue Princess Peach and save the universe, before proceeding to tougher levels, playing the game as Luigi. More deep cuts and Easter eggs have been promised for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, whose title was confirmed at a Nintendo Direct presentation on Sept. 12. The film is currently in pre-production.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters on April 3, 2026.
