Live-Action Invincible Movie: Confirmation & Everything We Know

A live-action Invincible movie is coming from Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and creator of the original comics, Robert Kirkman. Invincible was first published in 2003 before being adapted into an incredibly successful 2021 TV series on Amazon Prime Video. While the show has helped introduce Mark Grayson, the hero also known as Invincible, to a wide audience, the live-action movie was actually confirmed several years prior in 2017.

While development on the project has taken its time, the arrival of the animated series has only served to increase interest in the live-action Invincible movie. There aren’t many known details yet — such as whether J.K. Simmons will be reprising his role as Omni-Man in live-action — but regular updates from Robert Kirkman have kept eager audiences assured that the Invincible movie is still on its way.

Robert Kirkman Seemingly Teases Steven Yeun's Live-Action Role

After months of little news regarding the project, the latest update sees creator Robert Kirkman seemingly tease Steven Yeun's live-action Invincible role. The Walking Dead alum voices the lead role of Mark Grayson on the Amazon Prime Video series, but Kirkman revealed a shocking development in the live-action movie's cast list. While explaining the movie's lengthy development process, Kirkman also said "it is taking a little bit of time but I can't wait for everyone to see Steven Yeun as Cecil Stedman."

It is important to note that Robert Kirkman could have simply been joking about the major role switch for Yeun in the live-action film, and technically, no cast has been formally announced yet. The 40-year-old Yeun is much younger than the aforementioned Cecil Stedman, and it would take a considerable amount of makeup to transform the actor into the villainous part.

The Live-Action Invincible Movie Is Confirmed

Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Robert Kirkman Are Bringing Invincible To The Big Screen

The live-action Invincible movie is confirmed, and was first announced back in 2017 (via THR). Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are attached on screenwriting and director duties, with Universal Pictures distributing. While 2017 was over five years ago the project is still in active development, with Kirkman re-confirming the project in 2021 and once again in 2023, when he revealed that development of the script for the live-action Invincible is still ongoing.

Will Any Of The Stars From The Animated Series Return?

At this juncture, no cast members have been announced for the long-awaited Invincible live-action movie, and it is perhaps the biggest source of speculation among fans. Robert Kirkman's tongue-in-cheek update suggests that Steven Yeun will factor somewhere in the cast, even if he doesn't play the dastardly Cecil Stedman like Kirkman teased. Other cast members like J.K. Simmons are less certain, and the chances of the animated series' stars playing their original roles are slim.

Live-Action Invincible Movie Plot

What Is The Live-Action Invincible Movie About?

Robert Kirkman hasn’t revealed any details about the plot of the live-action Invincible movie. It’s not even clear if the film will be a straight retelling of the Invincible story in a new live-action medium, or if it will tell an original narrative that connects to the Invincible TV show. Kirkman’s comments so far have teased that the live-action Invincible movie won’t exist in a vacuum and will build off the show somehow.

However, until either he, Seth Rogen, or Evan Goldberg provide some clarity, it’s unclear how connected they’ll be. Given that Invincible season 2 is set to dabble in the multiverse, the live-action movie may be a retelling of Mark’s story from the first season in an alternate, non-animated universe.
