The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been subject to rumors that Kang the Conqueror is being replaced as the Multiverse Saga's villain, a reality that would risk harming the franchise's best post-Avengers: Endgame story. As far back as 2022, Kevin Feige announced the upcoming list of Marvel movies set to make up Phases 4, 5, and 6 of the MCU. One such movie that garnered a wealth of attention and excitement was the story of the MCU's Avengers 5, set to culminate the Multiverse Saga alongside Avengers: Secret Wars.
At the time, Avengers 5 was titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with the franchise in the midst of teasing Jonathan Majors' huge future role as the titular Kang the Conqueror. However, in light of Jonathan Majors' assault charges, the actor lost his role as Kang. This subsequently led to reports that Avengers 5's title would change, pivoting away from the character of Kang. If this turns out to be true, replacing Kang in the MCU - rather than simply recasting someone else in the role - would harm the franchise’s best project since Avengers: Endgame.
Replacing Kang With Another MCU Villain Would Ruin Loki's Story
The project in question is Loki, the Disney+ TV show that many hold in high regard as the best story of the Multiverse Saga thus far. In Phases 4 and 5, Loki provided the brunt of the set-up for Kang the Conqueror's MCU introduction. From being the primary project to deal with the formation of the MCU multiverse to introducing several of Kang's variants, Loki's outstanding two-season story pivoted around the character of the Conqueror.
If Kang is completely removed from the MCU in favor of a completely new villain, the years of set-up found in Loki would feel inconsequential.
While other MCU projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania dealt with the threat of Kang, Loki's longer-lasting TV story positioned the villain as a much more central piece in the franchise's puzzle. If Kang is completely removed from the MCU in favor of a completely new villain, the years of set-up found in Loki would feel inconsequential. Loki's story would suddenly be rendered unimportant if Kang's threat is removed from the franchise, damaging what is undoubtedly the best MCU project since 2019.
Recasting Kang Would Be Better For The MCU Than A Replacement
For this reason, among many others, recasting Kang in the MCU would be a better course of action than replacing him with another character. If another actor was given the chance to play Kang, Loki's story would remain an integral part of the MCU. The years of set-up, teases, and hints at Kang's future would still be important, thus extending to Loki as a show and solidifying its cruciality to the Multiverse Saga.
Furthermore, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would continue to be important to the MCU if Kang remained as the Multiverse Saga's villain. Not only would these two projects benefit, but the other small hints at Kang's looming presence throughout Phases 4 and 5 would remain vital to the MCU's overarching story if the character was recast. With a replacement, almost 5 years of set-up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be completely wiped out and made inconsequential, burying a story that was already divisive with even more glaring issues.
