The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has seemingly confirmed that Irish actor Barry Keoghan will portray him in Sam Mendes’ upcoming set of biopics on the legendary band.
Mendes announced the highly anticipated forthcoming films at the start of 2024, albeit with a unique twist on the biopic genre. Rather than telling one version of events in a singular movie, the director is set to helm four separate movies that explore the same version of events from the perspective of each member of the Fab Four.
Since news of the movies were made public, speculation has since gone into overdrive regarding the casting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. At this stage, no names have yet to be formally announced, but Keoghan has been rumoured to portray Starr in the project since June.
Now, in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Starr was asked for his thoughts on Keoghan bringing his life to the big screen. In response, he stated, “Well, I think it’s great. I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many.”
Is Paul Mescal set to play Paul McCartney?
In addition to Keoghan, Paul Mescal has been highly linked to play McCartney. While on the press run for Gladiator II, Mescal has routinely responded to the speculation, and his comments have only heightened the rumours.
During a recent interview with GQ, Mescal addressed the rumours and admitted that he would “love to be involved” with Mendes’ biopics. However, he caveats this by saying there is currently “nothing set in stone” but doesn’t acknowledge whether talks have taken place.
Furthermore, in another interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mescal said, “It would be an incredible story to be attached too, Sam Mendes is attached to direct. It truly would be a dream come true.”
Who is playing George Harrison and John Lennon in Beatles biopics?
Baby Girl star Harris Dickinson has reportedly been chosen to play Lennon, and similarly to Mescal, he’s refused to deny his connection to Mendes’ upcoming project.
Remaining tight-lipped during an interview with Dazed, Dickinson said: “There’s nothing I can say about that; it might not be true, it might be, I don’t know… there’s a speculation culture.”
Regarding the casting of George Harrison, the late guitarist’s part was initially linked to Charlie Rowe. However, over the last month, both The Sun and InSneider have stated that Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn has instead landed the role.
While nothing is official in Hollywood until it’s announced, as schedule conflicts could lead to casting changes, as of now, it appears that Keoghan, Mescal, Dickinson, and Quinn will come together to play the Fab Four.
Additionally, it’s believed each movie will be helmed by a different scriptwriter, with Peter Straughan handling Harrison’s movie. Meanwhile, Krysty Wilson Cairns is also alleged to have signed on to write another.
The four Beatles biopics are set for a 2027 release.
