‘Harold & Kumar 4’ in the Works, John Cho and Kal Penn Expected to Return

Break out the White Castle because Kal Penn and John Cho are expected to return for another “Harold & Kumar” adventure.

A fourth movie is in the works with the original “Harold & Kumar” writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg set to direct a new installment in the buddy stoner comedy series, Variety has confirmed. They will also write the screenplay with Josh Heald. Mandate Pictures, which is owned by Lionsgate, will produce the film.

Cho and Penn are presumed to reprise their roles as Harold and Kumar but no deals have been finalized. It’s unclear if Neil Patrick Harris, who played a pivotal role in the film series, will be back.

“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all,” Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news of “Harold & Kumar 4.” “It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”

The original adventure, 2004’s “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” follows two pals whose pot-fueled munchies trip to the fast-food burger joint takes a zany turn. The comedy became a hit and spawned two sequels, 2008’s “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” and 2011’s “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.”

Penn has long expressed a desire to return to Harold and Kumar’s world.

“We would love to do a fourth movie. John Cho and I text about it all the time,” Penn told Variety in 2020. “Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg — who created and wrote all three movies in the franchise — we all would love to do one. I think we all, thankfully, have the blessing of being really busy right now and want to find the right venue and the right timing.”
