‘Jennifer’s Body’ Director Karyn Kusama Teases Diablo Cody’s “Fun & Crazy” Sequel, Recalls Pete Wentz’s Audition, Says Cult Status “Tickles Me”

While box office gross is usually an indicator of a film's success, not every film that flopped in theaters is instantly forgotten. In Jennifer's Body's case, the marketing worked against it, and the film was largely ignored.

However, the Megan Fox-led dark horror comedy has turned into a cult classic, with viewers rediscovering it several years later and asking for a sequel. The creative team, which consisted of director Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody, has often addressed their love for the misunderstood vampire film and shared their hopes for a follow-up. Per Deadline, Jennifer's Body 2 has just received the encouraging update everyone was asking for.

Kusama addressed the "fun and crazy" idea they have for the sequel. She also teased that writer Diablo Cody is still working on the sequel, which is shaping up.

"I know she’s working on it right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it," Kusama revealed. "I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film. And I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it."

The director admitted that, despite the film's woes, she is "just so grateful that the film managed to find its audience," even though that was "perhaps on a different timeline than any of us might have expected or hoped for, but I’m just so thankful that the work continues to speak to people. I’m just so satisfied by that."

She explained the ongoing popularity was unexpected, but flattering. "For the part of me that has a healthy ego that I try to keep in check, to have Jennifer’s Body be like the antidote to another classic film that I worship. But the idea that Jennifer’s Body would be somebody’s Godfather, that just tickles me all the way down to my toes."

Jennifer's Body Had an Underwhelming Reception

The film follows a beautiful cheerleader who gets possessed by a demon that makes her eat humans. The film later turned into a female empowerment classic, despite its initial poor reception. The horror barely grossed $31.6 million against a $16 million budget, which wasn't enough to lead to a profit.

At the same time, Jennifer's Body was also plagued with negative reviews. Although the film dealt with feminist themes and empowerment, it was generally marketed around Megan Fox's sex appeal and targeted a younger male audience, instead of its real audience. The horror has a "rotten" 47% rating from the critics and only 36% from the audience. However, it has become a streaming sensation since.
