It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Gets a Massive Update From Co-Creator

With the It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 finale now wrapped, fans are eager to know if there will be Season 2 or even Season 3. Co-creator Andy Muschietti has given a huge update that points to a long-term plan for the show.

Andy Muschietti discusses the future of It: Welcome to Derry

Andy Muschietti made it clear that It: Welcome to Derry was never intended as a one-off project. “For now…our intention is to complete this big story, which is the 3 seasons of Welcome to Derry, which is a story in itself, and Season 1 is just the first of three steps in this story. So yeah, a lot more story to cover,” he told Cinepop.

This update means that It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 and even Season 3 are already mapped out creatively, even if official renewals are yet to be announced. The series is designed as a self-contained three-season arc that expands the mythology of Derry and the origins of Pennywise beyond what audiences saw in the It films.

Moreover, this plan aligns with previous comments made to Variety, where the Muschietti outlined a trilogy based on Pennywise’s critical feeding cycles in the town’s history. “Our big story arc involves three seasons, mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935, and 1908,” Andy explained.

Season 1, set primarily in 1962, acted as a direct prequel to the 2017 film. Future seasons are expected to travel further back in time, exploring the 1935 and 1908 cycles referenced in Stephen King’s novel. The series aims to unpack the “hidden story” and “crumbs” King left in the book’s interludes. “I realized there was a hidden story there, and that Stephen King was leaving crumbs that could guide is [us] somewhere. It’s a story told backwards,” Muschietti noted.

All in all, with the finale now out and two more seasons planned, It: Welcome to Derry expands the franchise with an ambitious and unpredictable story. As Muschietti bluntly puts it, “nobody is safe in Derry.”
