Nova's MCU debut will be in a Disney+ series rather than a movie, according to a new report. Nova is a character who has long been rumored to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the hero sharing connections to the cosmic Guardians of the Galaxy franchise through the Nova Corps. While a Nova project has been known to be in development for some time, it was unclear if it would be a movie, special presentation, or series — until now.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nova will be a series on Disney+. The report also revealed that the show is currently in slow development due to the new MCU Phase 5 show release plan. Marvel Studios is in the middle of reevaluating its Disney+ output, with the studio opting to release fewer shows and space them out. Check out the full quote below:
And shows in development, such as Nova, are now on a slower path.
How Nova Could Fit Into The MCU
The primary version of Nova, Richard Rider, has a clear path to how he could debut in the MCU. Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the planet Xandar — home of the Nova Corps — was decimated by the Mad Titan Thanos in his pursuit of the Power Stone. Rider originally got his powers in the comics after a similar event befell the Nova Corps, so it makes sense for Richard Rider to rebuild the MCU's Nova Corps. While the Nova series is currently going through a slow development process due to Marvel's new Disney+ approach, there is a way the character could debut in the MCU before the show releases.
A fully realized version of Richard Rider as the superhero Nova could be set to debut this year as a cameo on Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The character has been set up in James Gunn's cosmic franchise throughout the years, and it would not be outside the realm of possibility to see Rider pop up in the final adventure of this Guardians team. A possible Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Nova casting could help the character become widely known, garnering attention for when his show premieres down the line.
If Nova appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Richard Rider should play a minor role, allowing for his backstory to be fully explained in the Nova series. There are two ways the show could go: Richard Rider acting as the solo member of the Nova Corps or the character dividing the mantle with the younger Sam Alexander. There has been a recent trend in the MCU of partnering older heroes with younger characters, like Doctor Strange and America Chavez or the upcoming movie The Marvels. The MCU's Nova series featuring two versions of the hero would fit the trend and allow both beloved characters to arrive together.
