HBO Max has finally announced the IT: Welcome to Derry release date for its upcoming prequel spin-off series to Warner Bros. Pictures’ blockbuster horror film franchise. The supernatural drama will feature the return of Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd, who’s reprising his iconic role as Pennywise the Clown.
“Set in the world of Stephen King’s It universe, the show is based on King’s It novel,” reads the initial logline. “It expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It Chapter Two.”
When is the IT: Welcome to Derry release date?
IT: Welcome to Derry is scheduled to debut on October 26, exclusively on HBO and HBO Max. Besides Skarsgård, the show also stars Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Kimberly Norris Guerrero, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, Peter Outerbridge, Joshua Odjick, Rudy Mancuso, and more.
The nine-episode prequel is created and executive produced by siblings Andy and Barbara Muschietti, with Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane serving as showrunners. After directing the film franchise, Andy Muschietti also directed multiple episodes for the prequel. In addition, Skarsgård is also set as an executive producer along with David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin.
Set in 1962, Season 1 explores the events leading up to Pennywise’s emergence, incorporating material based on Mike Hanlon’s research in the novel. “It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book,” Andy Muschietti said in a previous interview. “They talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot, the massacre of the Bradley Gang… and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks.”
