Judy Reyes (Scrubs, High Potential) has joined the cast of the upcoming ABC comedy series Scrubs in a special recurring guest star role. She will reprise the character she originated in the mothership series, Carla Espinosa, head nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital, which she played across the show’s main 8 seasons.
The 30-minute project, produced by 20th Television, received a series order in July, with leads Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke all returning to their original roles as JD Dorian, Christopher Turk, and Elliot Reid, respectively. All three also executive produce.
ABC’s new Scrubs will follow JD (Braff) and Turk (Faison), who scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises along the way.
Bill Lawrence, creator of the original series, executive produces the new show alongside his fellow Scrubs alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra; the latter two will share showrunner duties. Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer will also EP the reboot on behalf of Lawrence’s production company, Doozer.

As we previously reported, special arrangements were made to accommodate Reyes’ busy schedule, as she is currently a series regular on another ABC series, High Potential, from Drew Goddard.
Based on the popular French series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel, High Potential follows Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), a single mom with an exceptional mind, whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with the by-the-book, seasoned detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata).
Reyes stars as Selena Soto, the beloved Lieutenant of Major Crimes, on the hit crime drama. Soto pushes her detectives harder than perhaps she should and expects excellence on every level. Last season, she was the architect of the Morgan experiment. In Season 2, she, along with the rest of the force, has fully embraced Morgan as one of their own.
All new episodes will premiere on Tuesday, September 16, on ABC.
Scrubs ran for seven seasons on NBC and then for two more seasons on ABC. It followed medical interns Dorian, Turk, and Elliot Reid, as well as other personnel at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
The series was nominated for 17 Emmy Awards throughout its run, winning two. Reyes won two ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Awards for her performance in the series.
In addition to her work in Scrubs and High Potential, Reyes is also well known for playing Zoila Diaz in the Lifetime comedy-drama series Devious Maids, and Quiet Ann in TNT’s Claws. A sampling of her extensive TV credits includes Peacock’s Dr. Death, FX’s Better Things, Netflix’s One Day at a Time, The CW’s Jane the Virgin, HBO’s Oz, HBO’s Succession, CBS’s The Good Wife, HBO’s The Sopranos, and ABC’s Fresh Off The Boat.
On the film side, Reyes recently starred in Hannah Marks’ Turtles All the Way Down alongside Isabela Merced and J. Smith Cameron, and in Laura Moss’ Birth/Rebirth opposite Marin Ireland. For her role in the latter film, Reyes was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award in the category of Best Lead Performance. She recently wrapped production on the indie film Long Haired Businessmen, directed by Scott Gairdner.
Off-screen, Reyes has been a member of the LAByrinth Theater Company since its inception. Initially founded in 1992 as Latino Actors Base, the Off-Broadway ensemble-driven company aims to tell more inclusive original stories that expand the boundaries of mainstream theater. Reyes is repped by Buchwald, ATA Management and Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell & Vassallo.
